Writing is not
about one thing not about this issue or that, or this concern or another, and since its concern is human life in one way or another, sooner or later cruelty and love and weakness become its subject . I believe that writing also has to show what can be otherwise, what it is that the hard domineering eye cannot see, what makes people, apparently small in stature, feel assured in themselves regardless of the disdain of others . So I found it necessary to write about that as well, and to do so truthfully, so that both the ugliness and the virtue come through, and the human being appears out of the simplification and stereotype . Writing is best when it's
complete when it's finished. The process itself has its pleasures. Abdulrazak Gurnah was born in 1948 and grew up on the island of
Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean but arrived in England as a refugee in

Al momento non avevo realizzato fino in fondo che cosa significasse quella decisione . Non si tratta mai solo di una destinazione geografica : quello che ti stai lasciando alle spalle ti tormenterà per il resto della vita . ha avuto un’infanzia felice? che differenze vede tra lei e i migranti di oggi ? I numeri . Il volume di persone che stanno facendo questi viaggi è aumentato e credo sia una dimostrazione della violenza che ora è più diffusa in molti posti del mondo . E poi direi la conoscenza . Queste persone oggi sanno molto di più del mondo di quanto non ne sapessi io quando sono partito . Ora c’è Internet, la tv .
